Basketball Queensland is set to take the court at the Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre after Logan City Council entered into a 5-year lease agreement with Basketball Queensland for the management of the facility on Browns Plains Road at Crestmead.
Councillor Laurie Koranski, chair of the city lifestyle committee, says “Logan Metro is an excellent venue and to have Basketball Queensland seek it out is a testament to the quality of the facilities”
The centre has recently undergone renovations which included replacing the courts. The upgrades will allow the venue to be used for a variety of sports and events, not just basketball with the centre most recently used as the home and training grounds of The Brisbane Roar.
Logan’s main Basketball governing body is the Logan Thunder who operate out of Bendigo Bank Stadium in Cornubia. Logan Basketball runs junior competitions out of Logan Metro and will continue to do so under this new arrangement, says General Manager, Mitchell Young.
“Logan Basketball is very excited to have our governing body take over the management lease of the Logan Metro Sports and Entertainment Centre. We believe this will lead to growth in Basketball participation in the wider Logan City community including Western Logan. Logan Basketball currently runs our own competitions and programs out of the Logan Metro Sports Centre and will continue to do so under the Basketball Queensland management lease.”
Basketball in Logan has seen a huge increase in popularity in recent times and this is supported by the strong play of the Logan Thunder in the semi-professional NBL1 competition. Both the mens and womens Thunder teams will be playing in the Quarter finals next Saturday August 28th.
