Aged care facility at Bethania under investigation after 10 deaths

An aged care facility in Logan’s east is under investigation after recording the highest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in Queensland.

The Federal Health Department’s latest report into COVID-19 and aged care says Jeta Gardens aged care facility at Bethania has recorded 94 residents and 80 staff as having caught COVID-19.

Ten deaths have been recorded at the facility over the last month, with the latest fatality this afternoon.

After an assessment of the nursing home in August last year, a performance report found “deficiencies in the service’s preparedness for a COVID-19 outbreak” and said that problems had previously been identified in a performance assessment six months earlier.

Waterford MP and Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman, whose electorate encompasses Bethania, says she’s shocked and saddened by the situation at Jeta Gardens.

“We have been hearing for months that the Federal Government has not organised enough vaccination boosters and ensured the safety of residents in aged care.’

“I have spoken to the Federal member about this worrying issue and anyone with concerns about loved ones who are residents or staff at Jeta Gardens should contact my office for assistance.”

A junior spokesperson from Jeta Gardens has told MyNewsFeed they couldn’t yet comment on the report.
