Chung Tian Temple

Often when we think of tourist attractions and things to do,  we fail to see what is right at our door. I find this is especially prevalent across Logan City. With The Gold Coast just minutes down the highway and some of Australia’s most recognised tourist attractions within throwing distance it is excusable to forget what we have within our own city limits.

One of the most impressive locations here in Logan is the Chung Tian Buddhist Temple located on Underwood Road at Priestdale. The temple was constructed in 1992 using traditional Chinese architecture and designed to resemble a Chinese Palace.

I was lucky enough to visit the temple on a grade 7 school trip 20 years ago! Safe to say it has changed significantly between then and when I was invited to tour the property this week.

The existing portion of the temple features many beautiful gardens that allow for moments of peaceful reflection no matter what your belief structure. The property is incredibly secluded, set amongst the bushlands behind Underwood Park, you feel disconnected from the hustle of the city that is mere meters away. Within the many meditation halls, it is impossible to not be awestruck by the incredible artwork on display. The ceilings and walls are covered with beautiful hand-painted murals and tiles.

As with all childhood memories the “towering statues of Buddha” although beautiful and impressive are much more reasonably sized through adult eyes. They are however striking with their bright gold colourings set against the pale pinks of the paintings on the ceilings. The one thing that remains with me from my visit 20 years ago that rang true again upon return is the subtle smell of incense that fills each room, not overpowering however constantly present.

The museum and gift shop features some nice cultural items along with books and ornaments for sale at very reasonable prices. Their Waterdrop tea house serves beautiful teas and vegetarian food options however, due to COVID restrictions it is currently only operating on weekends

The biggest reason to be excited for the future of the Chung Tian Temple is the Stage 2 development. This is a massive undertaking that will more than double the size of the temple. It includes a revamped Art Gallery, dining halls, and accommodation for people doing meditation retreats on site. With roof tiles being sourced from Japan and every effort taken to maintain a traditionally culturally accurate design, this is sure to be a spectacular addition to the City of Logan’s tourism sector. The Stage 2 section is due for opening in May of next year.

The Chung Tian Temple is a fantastic place to spend some time either as quiet time for yourself or to take the family for something a bit different this weekend. Due to current restrictions, you do need to pre-register your visit on the Temple website however it is completely free to visit. They also kindly ask that you wear a mask while on site.
