Council has reflected on the tragic death of a local teenager over the weekend, and moved a motion for the Logan City Mayor to write a letter to the State Government to have the notoriously dangerous intersection fixed.
Councillor Laurie Koranski broached the topic during Wednesday’s Logan City Council meeting.
“I’d like my condolences to be forwarded to the Anderson family,” Cr Koranski said.
“As many of you would have heard there was a tragic accident on the Beenleigh Beaudesert Rd just this past weekend.
“A young lad by the name of Ashley lost his life in that accident.
“Many would remember Ashley as an avid baseball player….but he was also a beloved student and only graduated in 2020.
“Ashley had his whole world ahead of him. He was a bright young man, his future was bright, and his passing has made a big impact not only on his family and his friends, but his school and our whole community.”
Around midnight last Saturday, 17 year old Ashley Anderson was in a serious crash at Logan City’s Bahrs Scrub.
He was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital, however he succumbed to his injuries around 4am Sunday morning and was declared deceased.
“Today I rise to speak on an urgent need. That need is to upgrade the intersection of Beaudesert and Beenleigh Rd intersection,” Cr Koranski said.
“I have on several occasions raised my concerns that this is in fact a dangerous intersection and that we need to focus on advocating for the bringing forward of traffic lights.
“As this is a State road the intersection therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transport Main Roads.
“Our residents have been telling us that this section of road is notoriously dangerous and our residents are dying.”
Council voted unanimously to move the motion for Mayor Darren Power to write to the Minister of Transport and Main Roads requesting that prioritisation be given to the upgrade of the intersection to include traffic signals.
