COVID outbreak causes extensive disruption

New COVID-19 cases have emerged across Logan and the Scenic Rim, as the latest outbreak disrupts local councils.

Logan recorded 856 new cases overnight, to record a total of 15,623 cases, while 59 new cases have emerged in the Scenic Rim, as the region records 775 cases.

Among the new cases in the Scenic Rim is Councillor Jeff McConnell, who tested positive for the virus, after taking a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) yesterday.

According to the Queensland Government, there are 1,436 cases in the Metro South Health region.

Overnight, Queensland recorded nine deaths, to take the state’s death toll to 72.

Those who passed away included an 18-year-old with significant underlying medical problems, a person in their 70s, five in their 80s, one in their 90s and one over 100.

Three were unvaccinated, five had received two doses, while one had received a booster shot.

It comes as local councils work to stay on top of the pandemic to meet the needs of the community.

Logan City Council has adjusted its schedule of public events and delivery of community services to navigate the pandemic, while the operations of Scenic Rim Regional Council have been disrupted by the spread of COVID-19 amongst councillors and staff members.

Two Logan councillors were also close contacts of people with COVID-19, preventing them from physically attending this week’s committee meetings.
