Logan City Council has requested the deployment of the Australian Defence Force to assist with local flood clean-up efforts.
Defence support to Queensland is being delivered as part of Operation Flood Assist 2022, as more than 900 personnel are deployed to assist with the clean-up effort in the State.
It comes as one of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) most respected leaders was appointed to take charge of Queensland’s flood recovery, with Major-General Jake Ellwood to co-ordinate one of the largest-scale recovery operations the State has ever seen.
Mayor Darren Power says the Defence Force could assist with kerbside clean-up.
A former serviceman, Mayor Power says he knows firsthand the impact the Defence Force can have.
“The ADF personnel are very hard workers, they are very disciplined and the best of the best, so if we can get some of these people working for us, it would be a huge bonus.
“I know how hard they work, they’re very fit, young and they’re able to achieve a lot.”
Mayor Power says the Defence Force would be deployed to the worst-hit areas locally.
“It would obviously be a big advantage for us.
“At the same time, we are getting the job done as well.
“Our kerbside clean-up started in the flood areas yesterday, the reason for that is, it allowed residents to get stuff out of their homes over the weekend, so we’re collecting that rubbish now.
“We’re hoping if we deploy the Defence Force in those areas, we’ll get the job done quicker.”
To assist with the flood recovery, the Queensland Government launched a flood donation campaign over the weekend.
