Dispute continues over Wellcamp’s suitability as a COVID-19 quarantine hub

Community leaders have accused the Queensland Government of blindsiding them by not consulting with them before announcing a major quarantine facility for the region.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk travelled to Wellcamp Airport on the city’s outskirts on Thursday morning to announce that the facility was under construction .

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio learnt about the announcement while driving back from an event at Oakey and says he was very disappointed by the state government’s handling of the issue.

“That shows an absolute lack of respect for local government and the people of Toowoomba”.
Condamine state MP Pat Weir says locals are concerned about a potential COVID-19  outbreak. Any virus patients will be treated at the state’s existing COVID hospital’s but Mr Weir says questions remain.

The 1000 bed facility is being built as part of an agreement with businessman John Wagner who believes the hub will be of benefit to Toowoomba.
