Hidden Coffee Gem in Logan City

There are always rumours of amazing spots hidden in strange parts of every city. Blackout Coffee definitely ticks that box. Tucked away in an industrial area in the back of Crestmead attached to a Crossfit gym, Blackout Coffee is a hidden gem, born out of the owner Sarah Coad’s love of food and community.

Sarah and her partner, who run the Crossfit gym that shares a building with Blackout, noticed that post workout, people were desperate for a coffee and heading off to find one. Thus Blackout was born. It allowed Sarah to show off her culinary prowess and soon, was not only servicing a steady stream of regular customers but providing catering services for the surrounding businesses.

Blackout features a small interior decorated with photos of the team and their families along with a pastries area that is very hard to ignore! There is a bench seat inside to park yourself while waiting for your coffee. There is an outdoor seating area with tables and barrels to sit at and enjoy the wonderful items available. It is easy to forget you are surrounded by warehouses while you escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The coffee at Blackout is sourced from Simply Beans, a Logan based coffee roastery that has been servicing local cafes for over a decade. I will say that I have had many positive experiences with Simply Beans, not just their products but also with Joe that runs it. So I may be biased but I really enjoy their coffee. I also am a big fan of supporting local companies so that is another tick from me.  However, beans are not the whole picture when it comes to coffee, you still need a decent barista to bring everything together. Luckily that is not an issue at Blackout, I can safely say that I have never had a bad coffee experience there. Side note: my 2-year-old son LOVES their Strawberry milkshakes!

The menu at Blackout is not extensive but what they do, they do well. There is always a large selection of pastries and sweet things to go along with the rolls and sandwiches available on the menu.

I ordered the Brekky Roll which is simple; bacon, egg and sauce on a baguette. When dealing with minimal ingredients you need to make sure the balance is right and everything is prepared properly, this is where Blackout excels. Eggs cooked well, bacon not too greasy and a good sauce. Nothing flashy, No complaints here.

I swear that even though there is always a steady stream of customers coming into the cafe, someone behind the counter knows everyone and their order. As I approached the counter I was met with a smile and a “Large strawberry shake?” (my normal go-to when my son and I visit together). I swear that 80% of the people that came through while I was there were met with a similar question. There is a real sense that the staff at Blackout know and care about everyone that comes through their doors. You can’t go in there and not leave with a smile on your face.

I love this cafe, if you haven’t picked up on that yet. It really is a hidden gem of Logan. I highly recommend it if you are a local to drop in and give it a try, especially the treats cupboard!
