The Logan Thunder will hit the court this Saturday night (28th August) in an attempt to win an inaugural NBL1 North title. Both the Thunder men and women teams have had stellar seasons leading up to the start of the finals.
With the final few rounds of the regular season being cancelled due to COVID restrictions and lockdowns the teams haven’t taken the court in over a month, but both teams will be confident going into the quarter-finals.
The women’s team finished second on the ladder after only losing one game this season.
They were lead by a huge play from their co-captains Mikaela Reuf and Mikaela Cann. Reuf is a US born player who represents the Canberra Capitals in the WNBL. Reuf led the league in rebounds this season with an incredible 17.46 rebounds a game. Cann is a Logan legend having made her way through the Logan Basketball ranks right up to the professional level. Mikaela Cann led the NBL1 North in assists this season with 7.62 a game.
The Thunder women will take on the Brisbane Capitals who finished 7th on the ladder. The Thunder beat the Capitals 86 to 57 in June.
The Thunder men finished the season in first overall after only losing one game this season.
They have a star-studded line up including Sydney Kings star Shaun Bruce. American born Jeremy Kendle has been a revelation in his first season in Thunder colours averaging 21 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists per game. Their center piece big man is Logan’s own basketball success story Michael Young who had a fantastic NBL career after completing 4 years of Division 1 College Basketball in America. Mitch serves double roles as not only the starting centre but also the general manager of Logan Basketball.
Mitch Young says, “We are excited to host a home double quarter-final this Saturday night. Our men’s and women’s teams have had strong seasons finishing first and second respectively. The Covid lockdown and suspension of community sport has lead to the league making the decision to go straight to finals. I feel confident our teams will continue the good regular season form into finals as we look to bring two NBL1 North Championships to Logan.”
