Logan City Council and local businesses have combined to help eight local students pursue further education.
And a separate revived bursary program has seen two City of Logan women given vital financial support to help their budding careers in sport.
Deputy Mayor Jon Raven and Governance Chair Councilor Natalie Willcocks today awarded $5000 to each recipient of a 2022 City of Logan Tertiary Education Bursary.

The bursaries, which support the students’ further studies, have been presented annually since 1996.
The 2022 Logan City Tertiary Education Bursary recipients are:
- Caterin Qassab, of Loganlea, who will study paramedic science at Queensland University of Technology
- Alexia Wicking, of Cornubia, who will study nursing at Griffith University • Kyra-Lee Hamilton-Mass, of Jimboomba, who is about to start a psychology honors degree at University of Queensland
- Melody Feiler-Clark, of Slacks Creek, who will study biomedical science at University of Queensland
- Claudia Birrer, of Springwood, who will study a Bachelor of Arts degree at University of Queensland
- Sunny Feiler-Clark, of Slacks Creek, who will complete a communications degree at University of the Sunshine Coast
- Elizabeth Thomas, of Loganlea, who will begin a law honors degree at Griffith University
- Lara Davidson, of Glenlogan, who will study Business at Griffith University
“Young people make up about 30 percent of our population but they are 100 percent of our future, which is why it is so important to celebrate and support their success,” Cr Raven said.
“We are proud to join forces with the local business community to give these inspirational people help to pursue higher education.”
Cr Willcocks says the application process was rigorous.
“Applicants were rated on their academic, cultural and community achievements and any special circumstances that may adversely affect their family’s capacity to meet the normal costs of tertiary education, as well as the presentation of their applications.”

Council launched the Game On for Women bursary program in 2019. It was revived this year.
The 2022 Game On for Women bursaries recipients, who received $5000 each to help support study in a sport-related tertiary course, are:
- Melisa Lawrie, of Hillcrest, a gymnast who has an eye on representing Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics
- Phoebe Bastian, of Loganholme, a university student who is also a cricket coach, team manager and association secretary
City Lifestyle Deputy Chair, Councilor Tony Hall, presented the Game on for Women bursary cheques.

Cr Hall says the bursaries will help boost the involvement of women and girls across all sports in the City of Logan.
“Sport, and being active, plays an important role in our community, and we are always happy to encourage and support women and girls to get involved, whether it is to chase an Olympic dream or just for fun and fitness.”
The Game On for Women program is a joint initiative of Logan City Council, Brisbane Lions AFC and the Queensland Government.
