Two officers hurt as stolen truck rams patrol car

Two Queensland police officers are hospitalised with serious injuries following a violent collision involving a stolen truck north of Toowoomba this week.

The incident began late on Tuesday when a truck was stolen from a tyre shop in Oakey. Queensland Police Service quickly identified the stolen vehicle and tracked its movements as it travelled through the region.

Officers made the tactical decision to attempt an interception. On Wednesday afternoon, they positioned themselves along Goombungee Meringandan Road at Meringandan, roughly 20 kilometres north of Toowoomba, preparing to stop the truck around 1:30pm. What unfolded over the following minutes was far more violent than a standard vehicle stop.

The stolen truck struck the first police vehicle with severe force. The impact caused serious injuries to the officers inside. One officer suffered a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding—injuries critical enough to warrant immediate helicopter evacuation to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. The second officer, also seriously injured, was transported by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital in Toowoomba.

Rather than stopping after the first collision, the truck's driver continued driving. The vehicle struck a second police car, injuring two additional officers who were in that vehicle. Fortunately, their injuries were assessed as minor. A third police car was also damaged during the chain of collisions.

The stolen truck eventually came to rest in Kleinton, a location south of Meringandan. By the time the vehicle stopped, police had secured the scene. The male driver—identified as the sole occupant—was apprehended and taken into custody at the scene.

The Queensland Police Service confirmed that three police vehicles sustained damage in the incident. The sequence of collisions highlights the dangers officers face when attempting to intercept vehicles, particularly when dealing with drivers who choose to flee from police rather than comply with lawful directions to stop.

For the two officers now hospitalised with serious injuries, recovery is expected to be lengthy. Police have not yet detailed what charges the driver will face, though the investigation into the incident is continuing. Authorities indicated they are monitoring the condition of the injured officers closely.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the occupational hazards faced by frontline police officers, and the unpredictable nature of vehicle-related incidents on Queensland roads.
