The foster brother of murdered Logan girl Tiahleigh Palmer has avoided a return to jail, after he was sentenced for stealing camping gear.
Trent Thorburn pleaded guilty to one count each of stealing and trespass in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court yesterday.
The case against Thorburn came to light in early July, with the case originally adjourned until August 24 while he sought legal aid, before it was finally heard yesterday.
Thorburn was the only person charged over the incident, with several juveniles dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
It’s alleged that the 24-year-old was one of seven people who stole $5000 worth of camping equipment from a bin in the yard of the Parkinson 4WD Supacentre store in late June.
The court was told that Thorburn stole three tents and loaded them into his car.
Following the offence, Thorburn cooperated with authorities, returning the goods and paying restitution.
Magistrate Ron Kilner handed Thorburn a one-year $1000 good behaviour bond, with no conviction recorded.
The sentence was handed down despite Thorburn having a suspended prison sentence hanging over him, for incest and perjury charges, relating to his slain foster sister.
Thorburn admitted to having sex with 12-year-old Tiahleigh, prior to her murder in October 2015.
Thorburn was 20-years-old at the time of the offence.
His father Rick, then murdered Tiahleigh, over pregnancy fears.
Trent was sentenced to four years imprisonment over his involvement in his foster sister’s death.
He was released on parole in January 2018, after 16 months in custody.
Thorburn walked away from court yesterday.
