Trial for Logan City teen over Australia Day deaths

A Logan City teenager who allegedly hit and killed a couple in Alexandra Hills on Australia Day has been committed to stand trial for murder.

Matthew Field and Kate Leadbetter, who was pregnant, died while they were walking their dogs earlier this year.

It’s alleged the then 17 year old from Waterford West stole the car from Cleveland an hour before the crash.

The case was mentioned briefly yesterday in the Brisbane Children’s Court  and was adjourned for a trial in the supreme court at a later date.

His barrister says his client is “profoundly sorry and remorseful” for what occurred.

“However, he disputes that he knew by his manner of driving that he would probably have caused those deaths” he told the court.

The teenager has just recently turned 18.

He appeared by video-link as the charges were mentioned.

He did not enter a plea and was not supported by family members or friends.
