Car stuck in floodwaters at Berrinba

Logan locals are reminded to drive to the conditions, after a car became stuck in floodwaters at Berrinba this morning.

The car was trapped in the rising water at the Second Avenue Bridge, just before 9am.

Logan City Deputy Mayor Jon Raven saw a ute turn around, before witnessing the car trying to cross the bridge.

“The bonnet has gone completely under and the car has stopped.

“Not a smart decision.

“This is why you don’t drive through floodwaters.”

The driver of the car was able to get out of the vehicle and safely return to land.

Despite seeing the car deep in the water, a ute drove through the flooded causeway shortly afterwards.

Deputy Mayor Raven says it is not worth taking a chance.

“While people in big cars think it is safe to get across, you don’t know the condition of the road underneath.

“If the road has been damaged or torn away, because you can’t see what it is like underneath, especially when it has been wet for a few days, the bitumen has got a bit soft, you can really end up in strife.

“Just turn around and go the other way.

“Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.”

A tow truck later removed the car from  the floodwater.

There are sign posts at the end of Second Avenue Bridge, indicating that the road is subject to flooding.

The sign was flashing at the time, the car entered the surging water.
