Coomera Connector at centre of political spat

  • Brian Lowe is an experienced journalist with a background in both broadcast and digital media. He has worked in both Australia and the United States, has hosted podcasts and has reported on a wide range of issues during his career.

A claim by state MP for Macalister Melissa McMahon that the federal government required the Coomera Connector to connect to the Logan Motorway has been labelled a complete fabrication.

Ms McMahon has claimed the LNP dismissed future funding for the connector back in 2013 unless it linked up with the Logan Motorway, however, Forde MP Bert van Manen says that is incorrect.

“No federal funding has been applied for on this northern section of the Coomera Connector and it would be extremely unusual for a federal government to impose specific design and planning requirements on projects of this nature,” he said.

“Gazetting the corridor was entirely a state government decision which required no reference or approval by the federal government.

“These claims are just muddying the waters and being misleading.

“I believe the state government is deliberately avoiding the issue of which route the road will take until after the election and then it will just continue on with what was gazetted last year.

“Claims of reviewing six alternative routes is just talk.”
