In a statement from Qantas, the airline believes its domestic travel schedule could reach 50% by the end of the year.
New figures suggest, Qantas may be right with Australians checking out their own backyard for getaways, creating a spike in domestic tourism.
Many are leaving their homes in South-East Queensland, with Cairns, the Sunshine Coast and even western Queensland becoming new tourist destinations.
“We’re seeing a lot of young families” according to chief executive of the Outback Queensland Tourism Association, Denise Brown.
Qantas is now looking at the potential for plenty of positive signs on borders.
At the company’s AGM recently, Qantas Group Chairman Richard Goyder said “Assuming Queensland opens to New South Wales in coming weeks, we expect Group Domestic capacity to reach up to 50 per cent by Christmas”.
“We know that latent travel demand is strong. We saw that with our ‘scenic flight’ earlier this month, which sold out in 10 minutes. And we saw it when South Australia opened to New South Wales, with 20,000 seats selling across Qantas and Jetstar in just 36 hours”.
His remarks continued “…With most international travel off limits for a while, we’re expecting to see a boom in domestic tourism once more borders open up”.
