Australia Zoo turns 50

Beerwah’s Australia Zoo is celebrating a golden milestone this year.

Everyone knows why the park is such an iconic feature, and 2020 will mark 50 years of wildlife conservation for the world-class facility.

Since its opening in 1970 by the Irwin family, the two-acre wildlife park has grown to over 700 acres, and continues to rescue, rehabilitate and release over 7000 native Australian animals every year, striving to achieve ‘Conservation through exciting education’.

To celebrate, Australia Zoo has announced the arrival of four critically endangered female Sumatran elephants.

The elephants will have hundreds of acres to venture across in their world-class Elephantasia, which opens in early 2021. Features of Elephantasia, include a huge swimming pool, fountain, trees and grassland.

Australia Zoo also updated ‘Steve’s Place’ in honour of its 50 year milestone. The special area originally built by Steve Irwin, now gives visitors the chance to feel like they are in the middle of the Steve Irwin Reserve on Cape York.

Visitors will also be treated to a 50% discount off their entry fee at admission if they are turning 50 years old during 2020.
