A 19-year old man has told a Brisbane court he was not the driver of a car that was doing hand brakies on a roundabout and ran over a policeman in Logan last December.
Joshua Grant Shackell was in a Ford Laser with 22-year old Sebastian Rodriguez after a Christmas party when the vehicle hit Constable Ben Condon at Yarrabilba, near Logan.
In the Brisbane District Court, Shackell denied that he was the driver when Constable Condon was hit.
Shackell said he initially told police he was a passenger in the car because he felt pressured by police, but then later confessed to being the driver after a conversation with his mother.
He said he changed his story because he wanted to protect Rodriguez as they were friends. Shackell also admitted to taking cocaine, MDMA and drinking on the night of the incident.
Shackell said he picked up Rodriguez from the local McDonald’s in Yarrabilba and when he got there Rodriguez got in behind the wheel.
Rodriguez denies that he was the driver and has not been charged.
Shackell was granted bail.
