Logan City high school student wins major fight

  • Rod Stephen is a former television journalist and has worked as Foreign Editor for the Seven Network, Australian Bureau Chief for TV3 New Zealand, UK correspondent for Seven and ABC radio and as a producer for Reuters TV in London as well as SBS in Sydney and Melbourne before returning to Brisbane to work at 4BC.

A 17 year old Marsden High School student has won the WBC Under 18 Muay Thai Australian Featherweight Championship.

Connor Gillen beat his opponent, Jyezan Polen from Mackay during a fight at the Mount Warren Sports Complex last Saturday.

Muay Thai is a style of fighting involving the use of not only kicks and punches but elbows and knees.

Connor has said he knew how to beat his opponent before the fight started.

” I kind of knew exactly how he was going to fight coming into this fight. So, during the fight camp I was training for exactly what he was going to do”.

Connor’s mother, Leigh Gillen is very proud or her son.  She has said it’s because of his dedication to the sport.

“He’s trained five to six days a week  – two to three hours a night plus morning’s for the last six years”
