The 2023 Bush Summit will commence in Tamworth, New South Wales, on August 11, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivering the keynote — his fifth appearance at the event. The summit will then travel to Perth, Port Lincoln, Hobart, Wodonga and Rockhampton, convening federal, state and local leaders alongside industry figures to discuss challenges and opportunities shaping rural Australia.

Michael Miller, executive chairman of News Corp Australasia, presented the expansion as validation of the summit's growing influence. "The fact that federal, state and local members from all sides of politics have invested the time to participate each year is testament to this summit's reputation," Miller said. He emphasised that the expansion reinforces "the importance we all recognise and support" for rural Australia's future.

The evolution carries symbolic weight. The Daily Telegraph editor Ben English traced the summit's arc from emergency response to permanent institution. The 2019 drought crisis — "one of the worst and most protracted droughts in history" — provided the impetus for the first Bush Summit. "We were letting rural and regional Australians know they were not alone and not unseen," English said.

What began as crisis intervention has matured into a policy-influencing platform. The summit has proven its capacity to unite stakeholders — from prime ministers and premiers to farmers and business leaders — in shared scrutiny of rural issues. "For the first time, crucial issues facing this vital community — the beating heart of our economy — were able to be heard and then politicians held to account," English reflected.

Four years later, the summit's mission persists, even as rural conditions have shifted. "There are as many opportunities as challenges," English noted, "but the remit remains the same — giving rural and regional Australians a megaphone to improve their lives and futures." The 2023 rollout will mobilise News Corp's state mastheads — The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Courier-Mail and others — in concert with The Australian and The Weekly Times to coordinate coverage across all regional communities. Miller highlighted the summit's track record of being "agenda-setting and policy-shifting" with demonstrable policy outcomes.

The breadth of participation signals that regional issues have transcended partisan boundaries.
