Perth wrestling spectacle draws record-spending fan swarms

Thousands of wrestling fans are converging on Perth for what promises to be one of the state's biggest tourism coups of the year, with individual supporters spending thousands on tickets, merchandise and travel costs.

The three-day WWE Crown Jewel spectacle, featuring wrestling icon John Cena in what will be his final Australian match, has already drawn huge crowds and prompted some fans to splash significant money on the occasion. One group of five fans paid $15,000 combined for tickets alone, with another $4,000 spent on merchandise—a total of $19,000 for a single group.

The spending pattern reflects the scale of visitor interest: tourism officials estimate that more than half of the crowd has travelled from outside Western Australia to attend, meaning accommodation, dining, shopping and entertainment spending will flow beyond just event tickets.

Cena's appearance marks a significant moment for Australian wrestling fans. The 17-time WWE world champion is in the midst of a farewell tour as he winds down his wrestling career to focus on Hollywood roles. This Perth engagement represents his last scheduled match in Australia, making it a final chance for local fans to see the wrestling and film star perform live.

The event's economic importance to Perth cannot be understated. The previous WWE Elimination Chamber held in Perth in February 2024 generated more than $36 million for the Western Australian economy, according to state government figures. That event drew just over 50,000 fans to Optus Stadium. The Crown Jewel spectacle is billed as even larger, with multiple venues hosting shows across Friday Night SmackDown, Saturday night's main Crown Jewel event and Monday Night Raw.

The significance extends beyond Perth's borders. This marks the first time the Crown Jewel event—WWE's seventh running of the premium event—has been held outside Saudi Arabia. It will also be Australia's first WWE premium live event broadcast globally via Netflix and ESPN in the United States, meaning Perth will command global wrestling attention for the weekend.

The decision to host major international events in Perth reflects a deliberate tourism strategy by the Western Australian government to position the city as a destination for blockbuster entertainment experiences. Earlier reports have compared Perth's newfound appeal to moments when Coldplay and Italian football giants AC Milan chose the city for exclusive performances and matches.

Tourism Minister Reece Whitby said the government would not disclose its investment to secure Cena's attendance, citing competitive sensitivity around future event bidding. However, he stated confidently that visitor spending would exceed the government's costs. "More than half of the crowd are from outside Western Australia," Mr Whitby said. "They're coming here spending millions of dollars."

For super-fans like Jarrod Richardson from Sydney, who has been following wrestling since childhood, the financial investment is worth it. "I went to the United States in the 90s with family," he said. "I've been following them for a very long time since I was about five years old."

Younger fans are equally committed. Olivia Nicolaides, 16, travelled from Melbourne specifically to see her favourite superstar Rhea Ripley, one of several Australian wrestlers performing across the three days. Other major stars including Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and AJ Styles are also billed to perform.
