The Moustache Ride is back.
Rebel FM’s Moustache Ride will be happening again this year in support of ‘Movember’, an initiative to help tackle prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
On November 22, motorcyclists from Logan, Scenic Rim, and the Gold Coast will join the ride to support the ‘Movember’ cause.
Avid motorcycle rider, Ash Palmero from Rebel FM, came up with the idea of the Moustache Ride eight years ago with colleague and previous breakfast show co-host, Dave ‘Daveo’ Holleran.
“At that time, the whole Campbell Newman and VLAD laws came in, and it was all ‘motorcycle guys are bad, they’re terrible’,”Mr Palmero said.
“But I knew a lot of guys who were into motorbikes, and they weren’t bad people.”
Mr Palmero said an unfair label was placed on all motorcyclists when The Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act (VLAD) was introduced to Queensland in late 2013. The legislation was brought in by then-Premier Campbell Newman as part of his self-declared ‘war’ on bikie gangs.
With this in mind, The Rebel FM Movember Ride was created. Mr Palmero says the charity ride not only supports the ‘Movember’ cause, but it is also about supporting the motorcycle community, including female Gold Coast motorcycle riding group, The Kysas, who have been riding in The Rebel FM Movember Ride since it first started.
“It takes a team to create this type of stuff, the cause being Movember and all the money being filtered back in, it’s just amazing,” Mr Palmero said.
Last year, donations raised $4,225 for Movember and had around 100 motorcyclists join the ride. This year, the team hopes to raise even more with Mr Palmero encouraging motorcyclists in Logan and Scenic Rim to join the worthy cause.
“Even when you’re just in the car, just following [the Moustache Ride]…you look ahead and all you can see is motorbikes, you look in the rearview mirror and all you can see are motorbikes, and you realise you’re part of something so much bigger than you,” Mr Palmero said.
“It’s just a really, really good day.”
Riders will meet at 8am on Sunday 22nd at JSW Powersports in Arundel on the Gold Coast, to begin riding at 9am. Riders will then travel to and stop at The Bearded Dragon in Tambourine at 10:30 for an hour, then continue onto Jacobs Well Bayside Tavern for the last stop of the ride.
