Queenslanders Last Chance to Vote

LOGAN CITY and Scenic Rim residents are being warned that today is your last chance to vote in the Queensland election, with fines issued to those who fail to vote.

After two weeks of early voting came to a close yesterday evening, voters must now visit a polling station in their electorate to place their vote.

Queensland Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen expects up to 300,000 people in the Sunshine State will not vote, which could cost Electoral Commission Queensland more than $40 million.

Despite these figures, this year the number of voting Queenslanders are expected to rise by 3 per cent more than at the last state election in 2017, when 87 per cent of eligible voters took to the polls.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has also announced that more than 316,000 postal votes have already been returned.

Commissioner Vidgen says it is encouraging to see so many electors having their say in the 2020 State general election by ensuring their postal vote reaches the ECQ well before the deadline of 10 November.

“More than a third of the total of around 900,000 postal votes have already been returned to the ECQ for inclusion in the count, which begins after the close of polls at 6pm on Saturday 31 October,” he said.

“Of the around 300,000 postal votes returned for 2017, 168,000 were returned before election day.

“The fact we already have more back than the total returned in 2017, is remarkable.”

Voters with postal ballots have until 6pm today to fill out their cards and get them to ECQ by November 10 for their postal vote to be valid.

If any Queensland resident fails to vote, ECQ staff will interview them and consider the reason before fines are issued.
