Dr Timothy Edwards

Metro South Health, including Logan Hospital and Beaudesert Hospital, recently welcomed 63 new psychiatry registrars in training, among them Dr Timothy Edwards, who returned from London to take up a post at Addiction and Mental Health Services.

“After completing a PhD in developmental neuroscience alongside medicine and internship, I was working as a postdoctoral research fellow in developmental biology at University College London,” Dr Edwards said.

“When I was offered the role at Metro South Health I jumped at the chance, I had worked in Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services as an intern and thoroughly enjoyed my time here.”

Executive Director Kieran Kinsella said Addiction and Mental Health Services attracted new recruits because it offered specialties ranging from child and youth mental health, to working with older adults in both hospital and community settings.

“Doctors will take part in a six-month rotation focused on caring for patients who need acute care at our major hospitals,” he said.

Dr Edwards said psychiatry wasn’t always an obvious choice for him, but he had become increasingly interested in the field.

“I became interested in how early influences can shape how we interact with the world around us, and the field of psychiatry is such an exciting space to think about these sorts of questions,” he said.

“I think I was especially struck by how patient-focused psychiatry is as a specialty; there are big rewards in approaching medicine in this way, for both the patient and the clinician.”
