Scenic Rim Regional Council’s only female Councillor Virginia West said she would be celebrating International Women’s Day, and has shared some advice for young local women.
“International Women’s Day is the day we celebrate the achievements and aspirations of all women, past and present throughout the world, and their contributions to our society,” she said.
“It is also a time to reflect on women in some cultures and countries who do not enjoy the democracy we do in Australia.
“I will be attending three International women’s Day ceremonies this year- hosting the Scenic Rim Regional Council Breakfast as the only female Councillor this term – the Canungra Chamber of Commerce Breakfast ceremony in the town in which I live and represent and a more family gathering to the celebrate women and families at Beechmont.”
Cr West said she believed it was very important to have women in leadership positions.
“It is important to have a gender mix in all leadership positions and organisations as we all have complimentary perspectives to offer and deal with challenges and achievements in differing ways,” she said.
“It’s important to be able to share and consider this diverse thinking.”
Cr West said the best advice another woman had passed on to her was to be true to yourself.
“Be true to yourself, listen to the opinions and thoughts of others and respect their perspectives even if you don’t agree,” she said.
“Nurture and care for others in your family, community and don’t ever forget to allow yourself a little nurturing too. Run with opportunities that come your way as they may not come again.”
She even had her own message for young Scenic Rim women looking to make a difference.
“Get involved and take an interest in your community at an early age – volunteering can be very rewarding, you meet all sorts of people and learn to adapt to different views,” Cr West said.
“Look out for opportunities to grow into yourself. Be positive about your future and follow your dreams.”
